The Future of WiMAX Is Bleak: Analyst

The Future of WiMAX Is Bleak: Analyst

By Stacey Higginbotham | Thursday, August 20, 2009 | 9:45 AM PT | 0 comments

The future of WiMAX is pretty bleak in developed countries and as a result, equipment makers aren’t likely to sustain their investments in the space, according to a note out today by research firm Analysys Mason. The note calls out Cisco and Motorola specifically. Motorola said earlier this year that it would stop making new investments in WiMAX equipment (it told me a few months back that it still supported the equipment, but that the R&D phase of intense investment was now over). And although Cisco did land a big contract to provide gear for Clearwire, so far Huawei appears to be the biggest contender in the WiMAX equipment market.

But analyst Terry Norman writes that Huawei is also focusing on Long Term Evolution, the GSM version of a 4G wireless network, possibly because WiMAX is played out. He writes:

Ericsson’s purchase of Nortel’s interests in CDMA and LTE will encourage CDMA operators to shift to LTE, creating greater acceptance of LTE in North America. Huawei is strongly promoting LTE and has recently opened up a new LTE laboratory in Richardson, Texas, where operators can familiarise themselves with the technology.

WiMAX, while a first mover when it came to delivering an all-IP network, had problems getting traction in developed countries because there wasn’t spectrum available for it. Now Norman argues that it’s too late for WiMAX in the developed world, as LTE deployments are only a few years away. Plus, he writes that from a technology perspective, LTE has caught up to WiMAX.  This leaves the developing world as WiMAX’s domain. And it leaves Clearwire, which is building a WiMAX network, the odd operator out in the U.S.

PHP Quick Profiler - Firebug for PHP

via WebAppers by Ray Cheung on 4/25/09

Code reviews play an integral part in the development process for making quality software. We can find out security holes, memory leaks, poor queries and heavy file structures from code reviews. Unfortunately, these reviews are also very time consuming.

We spend a lot of time echoing queries, memory stats and objects to the browser just to see how they are being used in the code. To reduce this repetition, Ryan Campbell has invested some time creating the PHP Quick Profiler (PQP). It’s a small tool (think Firebug for PHP) to provide profiling and debugging related information to developers without needing them to add a lot of programmatic overhead to their code.

Now, we only need to toggle one config setting to true and we can have access to an automated tool to help create a faster and more consistent review experience. Since anyone can use it, PQP also gives the initial developer an idea of where their code stands before the review.

From the "what took them so long" department -- AT&T myWireless Mobile

via The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) by Steven Sande on 5/6/09

The iPhone has been on the market for almost a year and a half, but it took until last week for AT&T to come up with a way for iPhone owners in the U.S. to be able to manage their accounts from their devices.

The new myWireless Mobile app (click opens iTunes) is free and provides much of the functionality of the AT&T Wireless website through a cleanly designed iPhone interface. After loading the 1.7 MB app onto your iPhone, you'll need to enter your wireless number and the password that you've previously set up on the AT&T myWireless website. The app doesn't provide for account creation on the device at this time.

Once your account information is validated, you're taken to a Home page that provides several services that you can sign up for, a place to view and pay your bill, a button pointing you to a summary of voice, text, and data plan usage, and a final page where you can sign up for or cancel services.

myWireless Mobile is a helpful little app for any AT&T Wireless customer with an iPhone. Check out the gallery below for screenshots.
